The First CrusadeThe First Crusade: The Untold Story

Common belief for the First Crusade was Roman Catholic Europe's response to Pope Urban II's appeal for Christians to come regain the Holy Lands taken by the Muslim and Turkish conquest. They were terrorizing and killing the Pilgrims who had come to worship in the Holy Places. This was a pressing financial threat to Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Kommnenos. He appealed to Pope Urban II requesting western volunteers to come join him against a common enemy and help repel the invading Seljuq Turks from Anatolia who would soon capture Constantinople, and his wealth.

By the time Jerusalem was recaptured by the Crusaders in 1099, not only had Komnenos regained much of his financial wealth, but an unbelievably large number of Crusaders had found an unexpected increase in their personal fortunes as well, an unknown fact.
